Negosentro.com | 4 Things Filipino Applicants Should Expect in a Post COVID-19 World | With the world currently in the grips of the worst pandemic in living memory. Overnight millions of Filipinos have been forced to work from home and millions more may have lost their jobs — some temporarily and some for good.

Certainly, some things will never be the same again. Even when the Philippines recovers from the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, something that may take years, there will be cultural and technological changes that will affect how we find new jobs.

Below are just some of the things Filipino applicants should expect in the next few years. Whether you’re looking for new Metro Manila jobs or an opening elsewhere in the country, these trends are almost certainly going to affect you:

1.) More remote interviews

While remote meetings have been a thing for decades, Filipino businesses have been slow to adopt them for job interviews. But the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything.

Many old-school businesses are now being forced to adopt remote meetings and work-from-home practices as a way to survive the long quarantine period — and many are starting to see the very real benefits of remote interviews. So much so that it’s almost certain that the remote meetings will become the new normal for many businesses, including for job interviews.

2.) Recruiters will rely on AI tools for screening applicants

Top recruiters have been using AI and machine-learning tools to instantly screen thousands of digital resumes for the past decade. The renewed concerns over hygiene will further accelerate this “no contact” trend. Smaller businesses will start to adopt AI tools not only to save time but to prevent unnecessary human contact as well.

As AI recruitment tools use word and pattern recognition to sift through resumes, this means job applicants that are interested in beating their competition will have to understand the basics of search engine optimization. An applicant that is better able to pass the AI screening will therefore have a better chance at getting their resume read by a human HR manager. Applicants that fail to adjust to this new reality will have to work far harder to even be considered for an interview.

3.) Virtual career fairs will take off

As more Filipino businesses realize the cost savings enabled by remote meeting tools, virtual career fairs will become popular. Virtual fairs are nothing new, but the COVID-19 pandemic has forced more businesses to use remote working tools and therefore more will see the benefits of holding virtual fairs. This trend may make job hunting even less geographically-bound than it is today.

While traditional job fairs will still be held, less traditional businesses and most applicants will no longer feel as compelled to attend them. Over time, traditional job fairs will start to be far less important than they used to be.

4.) Investing in a good internet connection will be more important than ever

Resistance to work from home trends in the Philippines has been largely driven by a conservative outlook within large organizations. But there was and is a very real concern about the viability of the country’s internet infrastructure.

Even today, people with less robust internet connections can find it difficult to enjoy the same opportunities as those with more reliable service. As virtual interviews and work from home arrangements become the norm, those who are still stuck with slow internet will be more severely disadvantaged. Whether the government and large internet providers will help ease this burden is another question altogether.

As history is still being played out, it will be difficult to see what will happen with absolute certainty. But with current trends, it’s hard to imagine that some things won’t change for job hunters in the Post-COVID 19 world.

How do you think recruitment and job hunting will change in the coming years? We’d love to hear from you!
