Your work is not done after you finish the job interview. We’ve all had those high hopes – thinking of getting that job when we received good responses from the interviewer. Yes, it may take days or even weeks before they get back to you for an update but in most cases, they don’t. You’re just left there waiting and hoping while the other opportunities slip away. If you want the job, you can’t just sit back and wait for the job offer. Try considering these key rules and guidelines for following-up your job interviews.
DO’s
- At the end of the interview, ask when the employer expects to make the hiring decision
- Express appreciation to the employer for being given the opportunity to interview and for his or her interest in you. Do remind the employer about why you are the perfect person for the position.
- Continue to show your enthusiasm and desire for the position, but don’t come off as though you are desperate. You can send an email to make it more professional. Keep the email short and simple.
- Do keep your lines open – phone, email, social media. The employer might get in touch with you soon.
- Do use the job interview experience to further enhance the way you communicate in your future job interviews.
DONT’s
- Don’t stop job-hunting, even if you feel confident that you will get a job offer. Try to explore other opportunities.
- Don’t make a daily follow up. Don’t try to appear desperate. A simple follow up of 1-2 weeks after the scheduled interview is just fine.
- Don’t ever have spelling or grammatical errors in any of your follow-up interactions.
- Don’t take it personally and burn any bridges if you do not get a job offer. Who knows if the person they decide to hire may decline for some reason, or the employer might be hiring again in the near future.
