Now that you’re all geared up for the rainy season — complete with first aid kits and food preserves, the next question is, is your basement ready? Read and find out how to keep your basement fail proof plumbing system.

Flooding is the biggest culprit during rainy season, not only in the streets, but also at your home’s basement. Heavy rain may affect the plumbing system of your house. When your basement and ground floor is flooded, the first thing you do is to mop and get rid of water quickly so as not to damage underground electrical systems. But don’t wait for that to happen, to prevent flooding, you should install a “sump pump” with enough battery supply. Plumbing and Drain Cleaning service provider, Roto Rooter explained,

Your home’s sump pump is a key component in the event of a water emergency and flooded basement situation. Sump pumps are often located in basements and crawlspaces.  This crucial piece of equipment pumps water away from your basement and into nearby storm drains. Routine testing of your sump pump will ensure that it is in working order in the event of a water emergency.

Don’t forget to clean and inspect roof gutters and downspouts. Repair all cracks in the basement foundation. Another way to keep the plumbing system running efficiently even on the rainy days is to prevent sewer gases from backing up into your home through your basement floor drain. Roto Rooter advised to periodically pour a bucket of water down the drain to keep the trap seal full. Also install shock absorbers that absorb vibrations in water lines to avoid distracting water hammer noises.

“Prevention is better than cure”, as people say. If you need professional help, call up a licensed and plumbing service.

“Septic tanks should be inspected and pumped every three to five years to help prevent costly replacement of the filter field.” Also, check your washing machine hoses for bulges or leaks because flood doesn’t only come from rain water. Replace any hose showing signs of weakness, it is important not to delay this step while the heavy storms haven’t arrived yet. Better yet, have your plumbing systems professionally checked, especially when molds are growing because of moisture or flood has entered your home,” Roto-Rooter advised.
