The Future of the Trucking Industry

Negosentro.com | The Future of the Trucking Industry | The trucking industry is one of the most vital industries in our nation’s economy. Not only is the industry responsible for transporting 70 percent of our nation’s goods, but they’re also responsible for employing millions of workers in the U.S. With self-driving trucks beginning to hit the market, but the industry may also start to see a shift in the way it operates in the future. Below we’ve highlighted some key facts and statistics regarding the current state of the trucking industry as well as future projections.

Current State of the Trucking Industry

The trucking industry is responsible for transporting almost all of our nation’s goods. From food to cars, to oil and construction materials, most consumer goods have been on a truck at some point. Whether you’re after Taxi Trucks in Adelaide, a freight company, or looking to move to another state, trucking has many different applications and adds a lot to the economy. In 2019, trucks moved over 11 billion tons of freight worth about 772 billion dollars. Not only is the industry responsible for transporting goods from state to state, they’re also responsible for transportation and cross-border trade with bordering countries like Mexico and Canada.

The industry is also responsible for employing many U.S workers. In 2018, 7.8 million people held trucking-related jobs in the U.S. We all know the trucking industry is primarily a male-dominated industry, but fortunately there’s been a slight increase in the number of women employed. Women currently make up 6.7 per cent of the trucking workforce.

If you’ve ever been interested in a job in trucking, now is the time to pursue it. Not only is the industry lacking female drivers, they’re also currently facing a truck driver shortage and in 2018, but the industry was also short over 60,000 drivers. They’re currently struggling to find qualified drivers to replace older drivers who are getting ready for retirement.

Aside from the truck driver shortage, the industry is becoming concerned that self-driving technology will start to take over and put drivers out of work.

Will Autonomous Trucks Be the Future of the Trucking Industry?

Many automotive technologies have started to make their way into the industry, including autonomous trucks which have already been tested on the road. While many are afraid that these trucks will take away driver jobs, analysts believe the opposite to be true. These trucks will still need human supervision, especially in the beginning phases. Small business owners predict that fleets will become fully autonomous in the next 10 to 20 years and the self-driving truck market is expected to reach $1,699 million by 2025!

These trucks are predicted to decrease the number of trucking accidents due to their smart technology and capability. San Diego based company Tru Simple said their self-driving trucks will positively impact the industry and the environment by reducing carbon emissions, lowering costs and increasing driver safety. In fact, TuSimple says their trucks will be 10 per cent more fuel-efficient than traditional trucks and will save about 42 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

In an industry that hasn’t seen much change for many years, it will be interesting to see how they will adapt to this new way of operating. Regardless of the change, the trucking and transportation industry will still be one of the most important sectors in our economy.
