The material that you are going to select is an important factor because this will affect your tile’s durability. Remember that normally the underlay is made of asphalt-saturated roofing material that will be covering all areas below the tile clay cover.

You need to ensure that it is properly attached or installed to end the process. In addition to this, install an additional layer near the roof edge and in valleys to protect the surface more.

You should cover the deck with two layers of No.30 asphalt-impregnated roofing felt or you can go with one layer of No.43 coated base sheet.

Selecting Right Clay Tile

You should select the clay tile according to the climate of your geographic area. This factor is important to consider because tiles are built to withstand different environmental conditions. So, you should pick the one that is designed best for your area climate conditions. Following are some of the common type of clay tiles:

Plain Tiles: It is a small rectangular section of clay with smooth or sanded surface finish.

Pantiles: It is a distinctive clay tile having an S-shaped profile.

Plain Tiles: This tile is having a small rectangular section of clay with smooth or sanded surface finish.

Roman Tiles: This tile is similar to the pantiles but it is having a cross-section that is flat along with a small role.

Installation of Clay Tiles

After you are done installing the underlay, it’s time to install the metal flashing near your conduits, vents, and chimneys where the roof intersects vertically. A 28-gauge corrosion-resistant flashing is better in this case. Below are the simple steps to install your clay tiles.

1-Position the first tile to batten with the crown facing up and center the tile from side to side. Next, you have to drive a 10d nail at the base of your clay tile into the batten. Remember to not overdrive the nail. Furthermore, you need to ensure that the tile overhangs the end of batten by two inches.

2-You should apply mortar under tile for providing additional support.

3-Now, you have to install another tile atop the inner end of the first clay tile. You should take the measurement from the outer end and adjust the end of the second tile.

4-Nail the second tile to batten properly just like you installed the first one.

5-You should place the two tiles to the opposite end of the ridge and install them similar in ways you did previously.

6-You should measure the distance across the ridge from the outer end of the first tiles placed at every ridge end. Furthermore, you have to subtract 16 inches and divide the result with 8 to get the number of tiles you need to install.

7-You need to start at the second tile at one end of the ridge. You should install the tile toward the center of the ridge from end to end and install a half number of ridge tiles. Remember that you should start the work from the opposite end and install the remaining tile to the center of the ridge.  Key tile will be installed at the center of ridge with mortar.

Type of Mortar

It is recommended to use a consistency mortar because it is easy to manage and easy to apply as well. You should install the mortar at the outer end of first ridge tiles and pack it under at the outer edge of tile to fill the gap at tile and batten. You need to smooth it well using a trowel.

You should continue to add mortar at the edge of ridge tiles at each side. Next, you should install mortar at outer end of tile at the opposite end of ridge and apply it enough at the point where the ridge tiles meet at the center point of ridge. You need to place a key ridge tile at the center of the ridge and remove all the excess mortar using a trowel.

Hope now you are aware of the process of installing the clay tile. If you are looking to repair your roof, then you need to hire a professional roofing company to get the desired results.
