Amazon was founded on July 5th, 1994 by Jeff Bezos. It is now quite possibly one of the biggest success stories of the digital boom. Amazon started as a bookseller and over time, it has turned into a household name which is beginning to touch upon all aspects of our lives.

In under 25 years, Amazon has grown into the world’s largest online marketplace and has many successful side projects, such as Amazon Kindle, Amazon Prime, and Amazon Alexa.

It does not matter what you are looking for, you will find it on Amazon. It holds over 50% of the USA’s ecommerce market and has lots of offers and discounts, which has been a key part of its success.

Although you may have an idea that Amazon is a pretty big company, when you look at its in numbers you will see that it’s a lot bigger than you could ever imagine:

  • Amazon has over 300 million customers around the globe.

  • These 300 million customers have over 3 billion products to choose from.

  • On average, an Amazon customer will spend $700 each year.

  • 1.3 million products get added to Amazon each day.

  • Each month, 30 million people use Amazon’s mobile phone app.

  • Amazon employees ship 30 items per second.

  • Amazon spends $7 billion on shipping per year.

What these numbers boil down to are Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, being the world’s richest man, worth well over $100 billion.

Amazon’s Acquisitions

Like many other giant internet companies, Amazon has made plenty of acquisitions over the years and it is one of the internet giant’s central growth strategies. More recently, Amazon made its biggest acquisition ever when it took over Whole Foods Market for a tidy $13.7 billion.

Amazon does not just focus on retail and ecommerce businesses. In August 2014, it purchased Twitch, an online video streaming service, in a deal worth $970 million. It has also taken over the robotics company Kiva Systems for $775 million in March 2012.

These acquisitions begin to make sense when we look at some of the products and services Amazon has released over the years. With their drone operated delivery service being trialled right now, it shall be interesting to see just what else Amazon has in store.
