MANILA – Why do some products, ideas, and behaviors are talked about and become popular? Why are some stories and rumors more interesting and exciting to share? And what makes online content go viral? If your answer is advertising, think again. More and more, people listen to their peers. But then again, why do peers talk about certain things more than others?

These are the fascinating questions that Wharton marketing professor Jonah Berger will answer on October 22 at the Brand Boot Camp 2015.  Author of the best-seller book Contagious: Why Things Catch On (also named as Best Marketing Book in 2014 by the American Marketing Association), Berger has spent the past decade studying social influence, and his research and ideas are often featured in publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Science and countless others. He has studied why certain New York Times articles make the Most Emailed List, why some products get word-of-mouth, and how social influence shapes everything we do—from the cars we buy and the clothes we wear to what we eat and the names we give our children.

Jonah Berger is coming to Manila for the first time to be the opening Keynote speaker at Brand Boot Camp 2015 on October 22 at SMX Aura Convention Center. In his talk, Berger will combine his groundbreaking research with powerful stories to explain the secret science behind word-of-mouth and social transmission. According to him, the key to making things really popular lies in six basic principles—or STEPPS, as he calls them. These six elements drive all sorts of things to become contagious: from consumer products to YouTube videos. He will also share a set of specific, actionable techniques for leveraging these concepts and crafting messages, advertisements, and information that people will be compelled to share.

Berger’s talk will benefit anyone looking to craft contagious content, whether it’s a manager at a big company, a small business owner trying to boost awareness, brand managers keeping their consumers talking about their brand or even ad agencies creating strategies to make their campaign viral.
