A healthy work-life balance is not just about getting the right amount of sleep, getting fit and eating healthy foods. Here are more tips you can apply every other than the basics.

1. Set work limits. Time management and efficiency shall be on top of mind when you are working. Work fast with quality of work and distribute your time wisely so you can spend more time for more tasks and resting. Try to devote your time until 7pm only for work and spend the rest of the evening by having a peaceful dinner with your loved ones.

2. Find an outlet. Do something you love, channel your stress and worries because of work through activities that finds you satisfying. It could be running, painting, and the like. Angela Ruth, co-founder and marketing director at Due.com shared, “To maintain a balance, I’ve learned that I have to relax at night, otherwise I’m constantly thinking of work, what I can do to improve such-and such, or what needs to be done that moment. I also like to play video games. They help me focus on something entirely different from work, while still feeling productive. I can relax my mind to prepare it for my next adventure (work or otherwise).”

3. Assign work and non-work zones. Usually, young entrepreneurs work in their bedroom, near the bed or on the bed. How can you concentrate on your work? And it is really not advisable to sleep where you do your work, you will not relax well because you know work is waiting beside you. Set a well-lighted working place, maybe a desk at the living room than your bed.

4. Be less perfectionist. In an article from Harvard Business Review, Marilyn Puder-York, PhD, who wrote The Office Survival Guide advised to avoid burning out is to let go of perfectionism. “As life gets more expanded it’s very hard, both neurologically and psychologically, to keep that habit of perfection going,” she added. A lot of us sometimes give up on fun things to perfect a craft or task. Go for excellence, not for pristine perfection.

5. Spend time on what matters. Identify what kind of person you are, the people you wanted to be with. Prioritize on spending time with people who you can be productive with and groups who will stick with you for some “blah” days. Set boundaries from people you don’t want to spend time with. They may be the ones that drag you to burning out from work or too much procrastination. Avoid mindlessly scrolling down updates on social media apps, you don’t want to waste your time on that the whole day. Instead, read a good book, magazine, or relax with a good movie with hot cup of tea on the side.

Bonus tip: Psychotherapist Bryan Robinson, who is also professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina also shared on Harvard Business Review, “When it comes to being a good friend, spouse, parent or worker, “the better you are yourself, the better you are going to be in all those areas as well.” __________________________________________________________________________________________ Follow my other articles in Vigorbuddy.com, Executivechronicles.com, FoodFindsAsia.com, PinoyTrekker.com, GoGaGaH.com and BravoFilipino.com.
