Skin Awareness Week is usually more recognized by the British community from May 9 to 15. Now, let’s remind us Filipinos on how to take care of our skin. We should not be avoided especially that Pinoys are one of the high-rated skin cancer cases all over the world.

The morenas and morenos in the Philippines are the most prone to skin cancer. Based on a study, 75% of adults from Asian, African and Caribbean backgrounds may have low Vitamin D levels, thus high risk to skin cancer.

From an interview of Marie Claire Magazine just last year, Racquel Lim from the Philippines thought that makeup and creams with SPF are enough to be sun-protected, however, she was diagnosed with asal cell carcinoma, nodular. Fortunately, the cancer was completely removed. She advised, “Do everything you can to protect your skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure, and make time to examine your body for any abnormalities like unusual rashes and moles.”

There are two main types of skin caner; non-melanoma and melanoma, which is less common but more dangerous. How do we avoid this? By wearing the right value of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and general check-ups from a doctor. SPF 15 is just for everyday use but when you know you are going to the beach, especially that it’s still summer, you should go up to SPF 50 or more than that. The higher the SPF, the longer you can stay under the sun without getting sunburn.

Skin Cancer Foundation also advised that wearing a dark and thicker clothing gives your skin more protection from the harmful UVB rays. Aside from SPF and proper clothing, Vitamin C is also helpful. Nutritionist Cassandra Barns advised, “Make sure and consume plenty of vitamin C-rich foods such as lemons, pineapple, pawpaw, kiwi, broccoli, parsley and tomatoes.”

Temperature in tropical countries, especially in the Philippines are still rising now that it is still summer time. We Pinoys are fond of going to various summer trips, and aside from that we work hard during the day, thus, continuous sun exposure. Again, let’s remind ourselves how to take care of our skin, one day, your future skin will thank you.
