‘The Shallows’ is a movie that taught us life lessons with its main character, Nancy Adams played by Blake Lively. Here are the ‘surviving’ lessons you can learn from the heart-racing movie.
The story takes place in a secluded island in Mexico wherein only a few people go there for surfing. She’s still mourning with the loss of her mother, stopped her medicine school and went on vacation. Little did she know that her surviving skills with test her against a shark waiting for her to be eaten.
1. Steer clear on red flags
Adams was looking to catch another wave but she unknowingly paddled to a partially eaten carcass of a whale. She immediately paddled back knowing that is a feeding ground of a shark. Lesson? Stay alert on ‘red flags’ if there are people are turning against you in life or your business are showing warning signs that somethings not working right.
2. Surpassing a conflict
‘The Shallows’ shows two conflicts, and those are Man vs. Nature and Man vs. Himself. Nature tested Adams and her determination also tested her. In life, expect to have different kinds of conflicts, Adams wasn’t ready for the challenge in the beginning but she became alert and stayed focused to stay alive.
3. Grab opportunities
Do not miss an opportunity in life that can be worth it, and especially, life-changing decisions. Adams measured and didn’t miss the chance to swim from one rock to another and rock to the floating buoy. She also utilized the school of jellyfish for her protection from the shark.
4. Don’t underestimate ‘will power’
Adams chose to live, in the trailer she said “I’m not gonna die here.” She chose not to be eaten by the shark, so she found ways where she know she will be safe, the carcass, rocks and the floating buoy. As the saying goes, “If there’s a way, there’s a will.
5. Be Creative and resourceful
In order to survive circumstances, you need to rely on yourself, and that is what Adams did. She took a break on her medical school but used her training for survival. She even used her necklace to stitch her open wound from the shark bite. You must do anything or in any creative way to survive. In life’s competitions right now, one must be innovative.
6. For every fall, learn to stand up again
Blake Lively’s role in this movie was quite promising, simple lessons to survival. Adams nailed it in this story, she didn’t give up on surfing. After a year, she returned to the beach with her younger sister and she finally finished her medical school.
