Yes, we all have “those days” when we drag ourselves from our comfy bed. Stop whining and starting your day negatively. Turn your lopsided frown upside down with these helpful tips.

1. Count your blessings

Begin your day by being grateful of what you have. We Filipinos are said to be very religious despite of different religions, we sometimes forget to pray in the morning and thank what we have right now. Being grateful is like you having a job, not all are still unemployed, be thankful because you still have family and friends that you look forward to talk to. Be contented of what you have right now without missing your goals. Remember, “You’re too blessed to be stressed.”

2. Trash Negativity

“Optimists invest more time and energy in their ambitions, so they’re more likely to achieve them, creating a positive feedback loop”, Says Suzanne Segerstrom, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Kentucky. So don’t waste your energy in sulking, use it to achieve on something, whether making a productive day, or making other people smile. There’s a saying that is repetitively reminded by a team captain in the hit TV series, Hellcats, “Positive outcomes only!”

3. Shake things up

Yes, change your routine. Feeling down? Don’t sulk on your seat especially on your office desk, you don’t want to get caught complaining, right? Instead, stand up, take a break, maybe head out and buy a cup of coffee. Take a walk, practice deep breathing, enough oxygen in your system will calm your nerves and avoids panic attack or hyperventilation.

4. Read or watch happy content

Reading a feel good news or stories will change how you feel about the day. Be selective on the content that you will look for. Log into Youtube and find bloopers of your favorite TV series, or just watch a feel-good movie. Hint: General Patronage rated movies are the best, good for kids, very light, no drama, that’s the right kind to watch.

5. Reflect

turn your bad day around

In the end of the day, take a pause, no need for meditation, but take a pen and paper and write down the things that made you sad on the day. Make a column next to it and think of how you can avoid it or if it happens again, think of ways to surpass it. When something goes wrong, worry about it for say, 15-20 minutes, then move on. Experts advised as well to list at least 3 things that you are thankful for every night before going to sleep, that way, you are recounting on the things that you live for. Remember the tagline of one Filipino commercial of Nescafe? “Para kanino ka bumabangon?”
