Baguio, as we all know, is the Summer Capital of the Philippines, and it’s the best place to chill out because of its low temperature. In case you don’t know, here are more facts about Baguio:
- The name “Baguio” came from the word “bagiw”, an Ibaloi word for “moss”. The city’s strategic location makes it conducive for the growth of mossy plants, thus the name.
- The famous lion head was put up as a symbol of the presence of the Baguio City Lions Club in the area.
- The Panagbenga Festival was simply called as the “Baguio Flower Festival”, and then it as renamed by Mr. Ike Picpican, an archivist and Saint Louis University Museum Curator in 1997.
- The Burnham Park was named after its designer, Daniel Hudson Burnham, an American architect and urban planner. He was also the one who designed the original plan for Baguio City.
- SM City Baguio, a shopping mall located at Luneta Hill, does not have an air-conditioned common area. On its location rose the Pines Hotel before it burned down.
- The city has experienced its lowest temperatures last January 9, 1971 at 7.1 degrees and on January 18, 1961 at 6.3 degrees. It was only until this year, February 15 that it almost happened again as temperature dropped at 7.3 degrees.
- There’s a Cemetery of Negativism in Camp John Hay, where, instead of corpses, there lay all kinds of negativities in mankind. The tomb marks include: “UHAFTO OR ELSE, Born Of Intimidation, Lived In Resentment, Died Without Fame”, “WHY DIDENT I?, Born: ?????, Lived Wondering Why, Died For No Reason”, and “KNOT A TEEMPLAER, Born A Star, Lived A Meteor, Died In Flames”.
