Computers process and store large volumes of data and information. Data for running programs is stored in the Random Access Memory (RAM) while processed data (information) is stored in devices with larger capacities including internal, external, and network storage.
Internal Storage
Hard disk drives are the most common internal storage devices. As the name suggests, internal storage are found inside the computer. There are two types of internal storage: rotating and solid state hard disk drives. The former uses magnetic technology while the latter uses flash memory. Solid-state drives are faster, but more expensive than rotating hard disk drives.
External Storage
As the name suggests, external storage devices are not housed inside computer systems. They are often used for data sharing and transfer. External storage devices can be connected and disconnected from the computer at users’ will. They include optical disks, external hard drives, secure digital cards, and universal serial bus flash drives.
File Servers
This kind of storage devices are designed to cater to the demand for data storage devices with substantial capacities. A file server may not have physical traits, it could be a cloud service that you cannot see or feel. File servers consist of many internal hard drives that offer shared storage solutions to many people. The server may be maintained by a vendor who charges a fee for the storage service offered to users.
Once a user subscribes for a certain amount of storage space, they are given details that they can use to access the server. The file server is treated like an additional drive that allows users to generate, change, store, and retrieve files from it. Only authorized devices and users can access the server.
File servers can use standard operating systems or a custom software package depending on its size and the intended users. Small network servers often use standard operating systems while large area networks that serve many people may use custom server operating systems. These software packages include Windows Server, Mac Operating System Server, UNIX, and Linux servers.
Storing information on a server carries certain risks. Therefore, it is advisable to use servers as back-up storage. In addition, consider using shared network storage services from trusted providers to enhance the security of your information and data.
